online%20survey%20to%20assess%20the%20career%20experiences%20of%20wrong%20side%20blocks%2C%20the%20practice%20of%20Stop-Before-You-Block%2C%20the%20recently%20described%20method%20of%20Mock-Before-You-Block%20and%20attitudes%20to%20these.%20Respondents%20were%20208%20anaesthetists%20across%20nine%20hospitals%20%28173%20consultants%20or%20Staff%20and%20Associate%20Specialist%20doctors%27%29%2C%20representing%203623%20years%20of%20collective%20anaesthetic%20practice.%20There%20had%20been%20a%20total%20of%2062%20wrong%20side%20blocks%20%28by%2051%20anaesthetists%20and%20one%20current%20trainee%29.%20Predisposing%20factors%20for%20this%20were%20commonly%20ascribed%20to%20distractions%20%2835%20%2869%25%29%2C%20for%20example%20due%20to%20rushing%20or%20teaching%29%2C%20patient%20positioning%20%289%20%2818%25%29%29%20or%20miscommunication%20%286%20%2812%25%29%29.%20Two%20%284%25%29%20respondents%20felt%20they%20had%20performed%20Stop-Before-You-Block%20too%20early%3B%2062%20%2841%25%29%20of%20all%20respondents%20stated%20they%20performed%20Stop-Before-You-Block%20as%20early%20as%20preparing%20the%20skin%20or%20on%20arrival%20of%20the%20patient%20in%20the%20anaesthetic%20room%2C%20and%20not%20any%20later.%20Twenty%20%2810%25%29%20respondents%20admitted%20to%20not%20performing%20Stop-Before-You-Block%20at%20all%20or%20only%20occasionally%20%28including%205%20%282%25%29%20who%20had%20performed%20a%20wrong%20side%20block%29.%20Mock-Before-You-Block%20was%20easily%20understood%20%28by%20169%20out%20of%20197%20%2886%25%29%29%20and%2014%20out%20of%2061%20%2823%25%29%20respondents%20felt%20it%20would%20have%20prevented%20the%20wrong%20side%20error%20in%20their%20case.%20However%2C%20free-text%20comments%20indicated%20that%20many%20anaesthetists%20were%20reluctant%20to%20use%20a%20method%20that%20interrupted%20their%20performance%20of%20the%20block.%20We%20conclude%20that%20considerable%20work%20is%20needed%20to%20achieve%20full%20compliance%20with%20Stop-Before-You-Block%20at%20the%20correct%20time.%22%2C%22date%22%3A%222018%22%2C%22language%22%3A%22en%22%2C%22DOI%22%3A%2210.1111%5C%2Fanae.14167%22%2C%22ISSN%22%3A%221365-2044%22%2C%22url%22%3A%22https%3A%5C%2F%5C%2Fonlinelibrary.wiley.com%5C%2Fdoi%5C%2Fabs%5C%2F10.1111%5C%2Fanae.14167%22%2C%22collections%22%3A%5B%5D%2C%22dateModified%22%3A%222024-07-31T04%3A56%3A25Z%22%7D%7D%5D%7D
